Barlestone lead the way thanks to excellent results in the league

-

BARLESTONE A currently head the table in division One of the Table Tennis League following some solid performances in their latest matches. Their top of the table clash with Goons saw the Barlestone team produce one of their best results of the season running out winners by 7 sets to 3 with Adam Pettitt again outstanding winning all his games.

The match was tight with both Ian Wetherley and Jason Woodfield (both Goons) going to four games in nearly all their matches.

In their next fixture they collected another good win, this time over G Ward B by 8 sets to 2. A Pettitt remaining unbeaten in the league this season. Bob Whittaker (GWB) pushed him to a five game set finally running out of steam in the fifth losing 4-11. Marlstone’s next match against G Ward D proved a little more difficult than expected. The freshly promoted Barwell side included the experienced Chris Brewer in their side for this match, due to other commitments he has played only twice for G Ward this season but had not lost a match so far, so his clash with A Pettitt (Bar B) was eagerly anticipated and it did not let us down. Pettit raced into a two game to nil lead Brewer won the next two 11-9 and 12-10 before taking the fifth 11-7 to inflict the first defeat of the season on Adam. Despite Brewer’s best efforts neither of the younger players Callum Dale or Edward Brown was able to collect a win, although Dale helped Brewer to win the double to make the score a respectable 4 sets to 6 win for Barlestone A.

Goons continue to exert pressure on the top sides collecting 10 sets to nil win over Barlestone B followed by another 10 nil score over Cat B to remain in contention.

G Ward A have suddenly sparked into life with a couple of good wins to their name, the first against their own G Ward D team which they won by 9 sets to 1. The match was not without its moments however as all three of the young D team players took Andy Spring to either four or five games before conceding defeat. Ollie Wynne coming the closest finally going down 20 points to 18 in the fifth. The biggest surprise was however the victory by Edward Brown(GWD) over Jason Essex (GWA) in a three straight game only his second defeat of the season.

Cat A have slipped a little in recent matches. In an unusual fixture against Queen’s Mira both sides could only field two players and in a tight match Mira came out on top by 5sets to 4. Rhys Emery collecting three fines wins for Cat A. In their next match they thrashed their own H team by 10 sets to nil.

Cat B came close when they went up against G Ward B away from home just losing out by 4 sets to 6, Andy Searle (Cat B) being voted man of the match.

Barlestone B gained a rare victory when they defeated Queens Mira by 6 sets to 4. Despite Ian Heavey collecting three wins for Mira, the more consistent Barlestone B side came up with the goods to collect the win. The scores were close all through and after eight games it was four sets all Norman Weaver (Bar B) then beat Pete White (Mira) in the ninth set to lead by 5 sets to 4. Weaver and Westerby then closed out the match winning the doubles to run out 6 sets to 4 winners, only their second victory of the season.
