Hospital staff get praise for ‘fantastic’ job over Christmas

-

SUPER staff at Nuneaton’s hospital have been thanked for their hard work as they dealt with an influx of demand over the frantic festive season.

Bosses at the George Eliot Hospital say employees did a “fantastic” job in treating patients who came through the doors of the busy A&E during Christmas and New Year.

They were braced for a surge in demand from those needing emergency care having seen record number of attendances throughout 2018.

A spokesperson for George Eliot Hospital said: “We saw a steady flow of patients visit the Urgent and Emergency Care Department over the Christmas bank holiday period and our staff did a fantastic job treating patients.”

With demand set to continue, it has been stressed that people can help ease the pressure on the department by ensuring that they only go to A&E in a real emergency.

The spokesman added: “We would like to remind people that they should consider self-care, talking to a pharmacist, or calling NHS 111 for advice if they feel ill. We continue to remind patients that A&E is for serious and life threatening conditions only.”

Just before Christmas, the Eliot launched a new unit in the A&E department - a Rapid Assessment and Treatment (RAT) area.

It was created following the £1million upgrade of A&E last year and boasts four nurses and five treatment trolleys each with their own dedicated supply and call bell.

By improving the flow of patients through the hospital by treating more people in A&E and reducing the amount of patients being admitted onto the wards, the hospital hopes to be able to ensure that key services, like surgery, continue in the traditionally busy winter period. oxygen
