Pub landlord speaks about crisp packet recycling

-

A LANDLORD spoke to ITV News about the likely impact of a crisp packet recycling scheme.

Richard Graham from The White Bear in Hinckley was asked on ITV News Central about how Walkers’ plans to create collection points across the UK where people can recycle their used packets would affect his business.

He told the presenter that the pub already had recycling policies in place including not using plastic straws.

He said on the programme: “It’s a great step.

“Well done Walkers for introducing some responsibility for the packaging that they produce.

“Hopefully more people will get on board and we can see what happens with it.”

Mr Graham was asked about the difficulties with some of the collection points being far away for some pubs but he said this initial problem would be overcome once people started to engage with the scheme.

“I’ve been in the pub trade for a while and there’s a different attitude to the waste we produce now.

“The more we get on board, the more responsibility for that, the better.”

The pub posted about the TV appearance on its Facebook page.

It said: “For those of you who caught the ITV Central News, you would have seen our landlord and manager, Richard Graham, talking about the new recycling scheme for crisp packets.

“We love a bit of saving the world.”

The White Bear is run by Steamin’ Billy, which also runs The Railway in Station Road.

Walkers is offering a free courier service to take away packets as part of the scheme.

The Leicester-based manufacturer launched the project after heavy criticism for its metallised plastic packets and their contribution to litter and marine pollution.

A petition demanding environmentally-friendly packaging had more than 330,000 signatures.

Rob Mellor who manages The Union Inn said that the scheme would not affect him as the pub’s parent company, Marston’s, only stocks McCoy’s crisps.

He said: “Any recycling always a good idea.” is
