Hinckley come good at the end to take victory in first game of 2019
IT was a shock to the system playing in their first game back after the festive break against Rugby Railway but the A team were keen to get onto the court after four weeks game free.
The game began quite erratically with both teams throwing balls away. However Hinckley soon settled in with Carole Payne’s shooting being spot on. By the end of the first quarter Hinckley were leading 12-8.
Upon entering the second quarter, Hinckley’s dynamics didn’t seem to work. Interceptions, throw away balls and several slips/falls meant that the quarter ended with Hinckley behind 17-19.
A couple of essential switches saw Hinckley gel again as a team. Holly Hemsley moved from GD to GA and immediately made her mark by scoring 5 goals in a row. Rugby Railway kept the pressure on but Hinckley soon caught up to finish the third quarter one goal ahead 28-27.
For the final quarter Hinckley carried on as they had done in the previous quarter. Both teams fought hard, making it the highest scoring quarter of the game. In the end Hinckley managed to pull away. Final score 42-37, POM Holly Hemsley.
Hinckley D played Stockton D and took them by surprise with their energetic play in the first quarter with some excellent shooting. They took the lead 11 – 8.
Stockton retaliated with changes in their team and unfortunately their attack dominated the second quarter. At half time Hinckley had gone behind 19 – 25.
Undeterred Hinckley tried a switch in their defence for the third quarter, and despite them keeping up with the Stockton attack, the quick passes were difficult to intercept. Centre court worked well together with good possession and many interceptions, Hinckley however struggled to close the gap in goals with Stockton’s defence doing enough to upset the rhythm in the circle.
Final score was 31 – 49 to Stockton with player of the match going to Heather Fraser playing GD. Positives for the new year to take from the game for Hinckley was their overall confidence, communication and general movement on court.
