We need a Wetherspoons

-

WHY is The Baron in Hinckley closing? There is always plenty of people in. It doesn’t matter what day or what time.

And why Mr Tom Martin have we got to wait three years. That is rubbish. He goes into places all ready built and he’s looking in Hinckley. Come on Tim, look closer and you will see four or five places which are the old picture house opposite the police station, The Yorkshire Bank, The old Somerfield just inches from The Baron and further down the old car and bike shop. Don’t wait three years, start sorting it now so its open when The Baron closes. I use it every day for my morning coffee. I don’t want to go anywhere else. It’s always warm in there in the winter, cool in the summer and the food is always good.

So come on Tim, sort it. The Hinckley people are waiting. Else it is just the case of another pub closing. Mrs A Dean, Barwell NOW that the Government has once again decided to allow development of the Big Pit, it is time to make sure it becomes attractive to current and future residents and the general public that use the area.

Such a project requires a cooperative agreement between council, planners and the developer and should include but not limited to the following:

control of surface and flood water;

an attractive public interface along The Narrows, The Cemetery and the Supermarket.

I suggest the following as a starter: housing that matches the existing diversified styles; tidy drainage along the side of the narrows safely preserving the attractive tree lined section; accommodating the drainage from springs and that from the flood water overflow from the Leicester Road storage pipe by creating an attractive shallow water storage pond that can contain potential flood water and be part of attractive gardens interfacing with The Narrows. The barrier between such gardens and the supermarket should be of stone or brick to preserve a peaceful aspect. The filling of the pit should be efficient and well supervised with adequate compaction to ensure stability and access along The Narrows should be preserved during the project.

A project along these lines would satisfy the requirement of diverse housing and a small public leisure park that protects against the known risk of flooding providing the Borough with a safe and lasting public space. Peter Riley
