Heavy rain leads to flooding
FIREFIGHTERS had to evacuate residents from their flooded homes in Stoney Stanton last week.
Heavy rain fell across the county last Tuesday leading to flooding in many places.
One of the worst hit areas was Stoney Stanton.
Firefighters had to use boats and inflatable sleds to evacuate approximately 40 residents from up to 20 homes in Station Road, Stoney Stanton.
A rest centre was set up by the Red Cross at the village hall.
Volunteers lent support to people who had to leave their homes.
A woman has told how a row of cottages in the village had flooded.
Ann Jackson said that all of the Mountsorrel Cottages in Station Road in the village have been flooded.
Mrs Jackson said: “My son lives in one of the cottages and there is water inside it.
“All of the cottages in this row are being flooded. It is not good at all.”
Rivers burst their banks and roads were turned into fords as the wet weather rolled across the region.
Several other roads were reported to be impassable for a time including Sapcote Road in Burbage leaving many struggling to get in and out of the village.
Cross Country trains were cancelled between Leicester and Birmingham in both directions due to the bad weather, with rail replacement buses drafted in.
A Cross Country spokesperson said: “Due to heavy rain flooding the railway between Narborough and Hinckley trains have to run at reduced speed on all lines.
“This is delaying services by up to 30 minutes.
“Due to the length of the delays, our local services running between Birmingham and Leicester in both directions are cancelled until flood waters reside.”
