A 26-YEAR-OLD design engineer from Hinckley is climbing 120 of the British Isles’ highest mountains to raise money for charity.

Liam Chase, who works for Triumph Motorcycles, has already climbed an impressive 106 of the peaks since he began the challenge at the start of the year.

The tricky challenge - which is equivalent to hiking Everest 12 times or walking the length of Britain twice - has been set to raise money for two charities which are close to Liam’s heart, the Alzheimer’s Society and the British Heart Foundation.

Liam began the challenge by climbing Cross Fell in Cumbria on New Year’s Day and more recently completed the National Three Peaks Challenge, which takes in Ben Nevis in Scotland, Snowdon in Wales and Scafell Pike in England.

Liam has funded the entire challenge himself and has done completed the climbs in addition to his full-time job. So far, he has travelled 27,000 miles since many of the mountains are based in Scotland.

By the time he has finished the final 14 climbs, Liam hopes to smash the record for the time it takes to climb the 120 mountains by a staggering nine years. It is thought that just six people have completed the challenge so far.

Liam said: “The toughest one I’ve climbed was probably Mweelrea in Ireland, where I got caught in Storm Hannah when on the ridge.

“I started the challenge on New Year’s Day this year, climbing Cross Fell in Cumbria. This weekend just gone I completed the National 3 Peaks with some team members from work, where we were raising money for the Lily Mae Foundation in addition to the Alzheimer’s Society and BHF (British Heart Foundation).

“I also climbed an additional two in Wales after we had completed Snowdon (Moel Siabod and Carnedd Llewelyn).

“The plan for the coming weekend is to climb Ben More and Dun da Ghaoithe on the Isle of Mull.”

Liam is hoping to raise as much money as possible for the two charities after losing his grandfather to heart disease and watching his grandmother suffer with Dementia.
