HOT food chain Greggs has opened its first shop in Burbage in a new retail complex.

The store is the first of seven outlets set to open in the £4.5 million Sketchley Meadows development on Rugby Road, near the railway line.

Customers can enjoy the standard baked savouries and sandwiches as well as Gregg’s Christmas range, including a festive bake, Christmas Lunch sandwich, Pigs Under Blanket baguette and the Christmas Lunch soup.

Tables and chairs are also available for people to sit and eat their food.

After some problems with the internet, the shop launched at 11am on Thursday, December 12, giving away its breakfast food for free once it was open.

The shop is the first in the Hinckley area to feature Greggs’ Hot To Go range, offering chicken goujons, potato wedges and porridge.

Area manager Mersay Clark has helped get the shop ready.

She said: “It’s been a really good start considering we have had a couple of false starts.

“Customers are enjoying it and asking about what we are doing.

“We have town stores but a lot of our trade is out of town, so we are opening more in non-standard locations.

“We expect it to be pick up even more when the other outlets open.”

Josh Rollins, 16, came in to see if they had any vacancies.

He said: “I think it’s good having a Greggs here, as I live over the road. It’s a bit of a trek to go all the way into town.”

The opening hours for the Greggs shop are:

- Monday to Friday - 6.30am to 7pm

- Saturday - 9am to 7pm - Sunday - 9am to 5pm A Toolstation and Johnson’s Cleaners have also opened in the complex on Monday, December 16.

Johnson’s Cleaners was previously based there and has continued to operate at the site while the works took place.

Heart of England Co-operative Society owns the complex and is to run a convenience store in one of the spaces, which will open on January 16, 2020, with an official opening event on January 18.

Chief executive Ali Kurji said: “We have had a presence in Hinckley for many years and are delighted to be returning with the opening of our new food store on the 18th January 2020.

“It is an incredibly exciting project and one which will mark a new chapter for the Heart of England Society in the region.”

Goody bags with scratch cards, premier foods and other items will be available for the first 100 customers at the Co-op opening event.

A prize draw and balloon animals for children will also be going on.

The other groups moving in, which are yet to confirm an opening date, are Topps Tiles, The Salvation Army, which is creating a donation centre in one of the larger units, and tanning group Consol, which is setting up a salon.

Mr Kurji said previously that they expect a lot of shoppers will come from the residential areas nearby as well as motorists passing through.

He said: “We will get a lot of footfall from the houses across the road and people going back in the evening.

“There’s a reasonable amount of parking.

“It’s a question of you pop in and get what you want, pick it up and go home.

“You don’t have to spend a lot of time in a convenience store.”

The boss said the society’s shop will feature lots of chilled and convenience food and will create 15 jobs.

The seven units will be spread across three buildings with dedicated parking, bin stores, a cash machine and cycle shelters.
