Retirement homes plan for town given approval

Complex to be built on sit of old national grid building

PLANS for more than 70 retirement homes on a former National Grid site in Hinckley have been approved.

The project by developer McCarthy and Stone on Coventry Road will include 16 one- and twobedroom bungalows for over 60s and 57 luxury one- and two-bedroom apartments for people aged 70 and over.

Construction is underway with the complex set to be finished in summer 2020. The Retirement Living Plus development will feature a homeowners’ lounge, a restaurant, landscaped gardens and a guest suite for friends and relatives to stay over.

A range of 24/7 security and support services will also be available, while an estates manager will oversee things.

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council approved the venture on the conditions that all residents would be aged 55 or over and that the communal garden must be in place within a month of the first person moving in.

The developer has launched a community appeal as it seeks a charity in the area to support.

Samantha Watkins, regional sales and marketing director for McCarthy and Stone East Midlands, said: “Our fundamental aim when creating a development is to support and integrate McCarthy and Stone and our future homeowners into the local community.

“Our charity appeal allows us to create those important ties with local groups and neighbourhood projects, helping us all to build a positive legacy together.

“We encourage any local groups who are interested to get in touch now.”

The 1.2 hectare site is between Clarendon Park and Short Way, the new access into Redrow’s Park View estate.

It was previously part of the wider Jarvis Porter complex before the premises was taken over by National Grid - now renamed Cadent.

The building has been empty for several years.

A public consultation was held about the plans at the Salvation Army in Hinckley in September.

Plans were recently approved for two four-storey blocks of 33 flats and seven houses on the former Hinckley Leisure Centre site, off Coventry Road.

Also just off the main road into the town and between the two development sites, Lidl opened a store in August, where the HJ Hall sock factory formerly was.

Good causes in the area are urged to get in touch by emailing requests headed ‘Hinckley Community Appeal’ to mccarthyandstone@mccann. com, by December 31.

If you are interested in an apartment on the estate, call 0800 310 0384 or visit the McCarthy and Stone website.
