Priest takes over at town church for time being
Interim role for Rev Vince Jupp who will lead festive services
AN interim priest has started in his role to help a Hinckley church shape its future.
Reverend Vince Jupp, 55, is to serve at St Mary’s Church for the coming 12 to 18 months as a transition enabler, someone who comes alongside churches in vacancy as they look for their next, more settled minister.
The place of worship and community hub has been without a vicar since Reverend John Whittaker left the parish at the end of July 2018.
Mr Jupp said in a message to parishioners: “Transition is another way of saying change and change can be anxiety provoking but worry not.
“I am not coming along to turn things upside down or inside out, but to work with you all in order to celebrate the many wonderful things, whilst offering a nudge, question or insight that someone with fresh eyes can more readily do.”
He will be working full time, six days a week, and will preside and preach for the first time at the church on Christmas Day, at the 8am at 10.15am services.
His wife Sheryl will be coming along on Sundays.
Mr Jupp was previously rector in the benefice of Birstall and Wanlip and took up the position of diocesan transition enabler in December 2019.
He trained for the ministry at St John’s College, Nottingham, and was ordained in the same cohort as Mr Whittaker.
The minister said in his greeting message: “We begin a journey together without knowing just where it will lead us, but I expect it will be exciting and interesting and hope lots of fun too.
“Sheryl and I are praying for you and would welcome your prayers for us.
“Here’s to our future together as God’s people in Hinckley.”
St Mary’s is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm, with a second hand book shop and coffee bar as well as a space for people to reflect and pray.
The church clock and carillon were refurbished in 2016 and new carpets fitted last year.
