RESIDENTS have spoken of their shock after a man was seriously injured in a hammer attack at a Burbage home.

The victim is in hospital, being treated for potentially life-changing injuries.

Police were called to an address in Brookside at 9.20am on New Year’s Eve. The attack took place between midnight and 9am.

It was reported that four men had forced their way into the house and assaulted the victim with hammers.

Officers were stationed outside a house on the corner of Brookside and Burbage Road.

Neighbours said they saw several police cars and ambulance crews in the area.

Detective Inspector Chris Brett said: “Our investigation is very much in its early stages.

“Brookside is a long residential street and I would like to speak to anyone who was in the area in the early hours and saw anyone acting in an unusual or suspicious manner.

“Did you see anyone leave the house?

“I would also like to speak to anyone who has CCTV footage installed at their property or anyone who was driving in the area and has a dashcam installed in their vehicle.”

“You get the odd theft – people have tried to get into my van, not that I keep much in there.

“It’s usually pretty good. With the houses overlooking each other, it’s not so bad.

“But since they have turned the lights off at night, people have got a bit braver trying doors.

“I hope they catch the people responsible.”

Chris Yates, 35, who lives in Brookside, said: “Usually there’s noisy people coming out of the pub.

“We were in last night and were up until 1.30am.

“We didn’t hear anything unusual. There’s not much crime around here, it’s usually quite good.”
