THE first shoppers have been picking up their groceries at the new Co-operative food store in Burbage.

The 4,200 square foot shop in the newly opened retail park on the roundabout on Rugby Road, near the railway line, includes a Food To Go section, a bakery, Costa Coffee machine, and vegan and Free From range.

Steve Browne, general manager of the Heart of England Co-operative Society’s food division, said: “We have carefully designed the store to give all our customers the ultimate experience in convenience shopping.

“Customers will notice our wide aisles, and foods such as our pizzas are displayed upright, giving them a clear layout and adding appeal for shoppers.

“We have arranged our stock so it is all to hand and within easy reach.”

He added: “We are delighted with our new store and even though it is only new we have been receiving excellent feedback already from our customers and we are of course delighted with the way it has shaped up.”

The new food store has resulted in the creation of 10 new jobs.

Heart of England is running the £4.5 million complex of seven units, which includes a Greggs, a Toolstation and a Johnsons Cleaners, which opened in their new units in December.

The 1.36 acre site opposite the Hansom Cab pub was formerly used by Johnsons The Cleaners, and prior to that was home to the D M Rock and Sons workshop.

A Consol tanning studio, a Topps Tiles shop and a Salvation Army donation centre will also be setting up shop there.

The launch of the project marks a return of the society to the area, after it closed its department store in Castle Street in Hinckley town centre in early 2016.

Ali Kurji, chief executive of the Heart of England Co-operative Society, previously told The Hinckley Times: “We will get a lot of footfall from the houses across the road and people going back in the evening.

“There’s a reasonable amount of parking.

“It’s a question of you pop in and get what you want, pick it up and go home.

“You don’t have to spend a lot of time in a convenience store.”

The retail park forms part of a record £12 million programme of investments. Heart of England also has branches of The Cooperative in Barwell, Market Bosworth, Sapcote and Stoney Stanton, as well as funeral homes in Hinckley, Barlestone and Earl Shilton.
