Miss Leicestershire city event called off
THE Miss Leicestershire and Miss East Midlands finals have been postponed due to coronavirus fears.
The event was due to be held on March 27 at the Y Theatre in Leicester.
However, with people diagnosed with the Covid19 strain in Leicestershire and neighbouring counties such as Northamptonshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, where competitors and their families would be travelling from, the decision was taken to postpone the competition.
Miss England director Angie Beasley said: “Following discussions with the team and heeding Government advice about large gatherings, we thought it would be best all round if we rearrange things slightly.
“Everything is up in the air at the moment, and I’ve had a lot of calls this week from people asking if it’s still going ahead, which of course it must do in some way.
“We are keeping the Miss Leicestershire contest as a live event at the Y Theatre but this has now been delayed until May 15, by which time everyone should be more informed and clearer about everything.”
Contestants will also have more time to raise funds for the Y Sponsor a House Campaign which helps homeless youngsters in the area.
It also means current winners will keep their titles for longer.
Millie Richardson, the reigning Miss Leicestershire, supported the decision.
“We are all concerned about the coronavirus and postponing this is a decision to help stop the potential spread,” she said.
A public vote is now running on the Miss England website for the East Midlands and Miss Leicestershire competitions.
