Three accidents resulted in five casualties at the junction
A HINCKLEY junction has been named as the 20th most dangerous in Leicestershire.
Analysis was carried out of thousands of traffic accident records from July 2018 to June 2019, to find the most dangerous junctions, roundabouts, and stretches of road in our area.
The results reveal that the Iveshead Road / Charley Road junction near Shepshed was the worst for accidents in our area, with nine taking place there.
The crashes at the junction led to 17 casualties, affecting a total of 18 vehicles.
In 20th place was the Dodwells Roundabout on the A5 in Hinckley.
The statistics show there were three accidents involving eight vehicles which resulted in five casualties.
The second most dangerous spot is the Everard’s Roundabout in south-west Leicester.
There were eight crashes there over the 12 month period – involving a total of 18 vehicles and injuring 13 people.
A stretch of St George’s Way where it joins Waterloo Way saw six crashes, injuring a total of eight people, while there were five crashes at the junction between Uppingham Road and Kitchener Road in East Leicester, injuring a total of nine people.
The figures – collated from official Department for Transport statistics – only relate to accidents where someone was hurt or killed, and the police attended the accident.
That means the total number of collisions could be higher.
Across Leicestershire as a whole, there were 849 accidents at junctions between July 2018 and June 2019 – involving 1,658 vehicles and injuring 1,151 people.
The records were filtered so that only accidents taking place near junctions were shown – and any records without a geocode were excluded.
The accidents were then clustered into areas, so that crashes on different sides of a junction were grouped together.
That means that areas with lots of small nearby junctions may have been grouped together as one stretch of road – the most dangerous being a section of Commercial Road in Tower Hamlets, London that saw 24 accidents over the year.
That was followed by a stretch of Beverley Road in Hull, that saw 17 accidents.
Looking only at individual junctions, Bordesley Circus in Birmingham was the worst over the year, with 15 accidents injuring 23 people.
The data for the first two quarters of 2019 is provisional – meaning that it could change when the figures are updated later this year.
It is possible some dangerous junctions may have been missed from the list or ranked lower than they ought to – or some nearby junctions grouped together.
