Flingatrons to help teach children about recycling
FLINGATRONS have a starring role in a new, fun, interactive workshop aiming to inspire youngsters to become the next generation of recyclers.
Throughout March, the county council has joined forces with theatre company, Gazebo, to encourage youngsters to think more about sustainability.
The workshop brings the Flingatrons - evil beings from the future who refuse to recycle - to life and inspires children to save planet Earth.
Currently, Leicestershire recycles around 45 per cent of all household waste, but the council is always looking for ways to further improve recycling rates.
The interactive workshops, which feature a mix of games, problem solving, discussion and drama-based activities to educate children about environmental issues, is currently in the midst of a five-week tour of Leicestershire’s primary schools.
Councillor Blake Pain, cabinet member for Environment and Transport, said: “We want to get Leicestershire’s kids thinking about the amount of waste people create, and how we can all make more of an effort to reduce our impact on the environment.
“As the next generation of conscious consumers, youngsters play a key part in disseminating core messages, and this is a fantastic opportunity to encourage county children to start thinking differently about reducing, reusing and recycling at home, at school and within their communities.”
The county council offers free, educational waste reduction workshops, activities and talks to community groups and schools in Leicestershire who have an interest in reducing waste and living more sustainably.
