New Bosworth MP makes his maiden speech in the house
Dr Luke Evans spoke about the achievements of borough people
THE “beautiful and diverse” area of Hinckley and Bosworth has been championed in Parliament.
Newly elected Dr Luke Evans, Conservative MP for Bosworth, used his maiden speech in the House of Commons to praise the “innovative” people of the region, drawing attention to its notable achievements.
He spoke about Twycross Zoo, Mallory Park and Horiba MIRA, as well as historical key moments including the Battle of Bosworth, the creation of the Hansom cab and the legacy of Ada Lovelace.
He told his fellow representatives: “It is one of the absolute honours to represent the literal heart of our country here in the spiritual heart of our Government.”
Speaking about his background as a GP and transitioning to become an MP, he said: “There’s a lot of similarities between being a good local MP and a good local GP.
“You’ve got to problem solve, you’ve got to communicate effectively, you’ve got to distil complex information and give it up towards Government and down towards your patients.
“Above all, you have to care for the people you want to help and earn their respect, and you do that by working hard, and I pledge to work tirelessly for the people of Bosworth.”
Dr Evans was elected in the General
Election in December 2019 with a huge majority, succeeding former Conservative David Tredinnick, who held the seat for 32 years.
Addressing the question of what he wants to change, Dr Evans said in his speech: “I don’t really want to change the world, I want to solve the world.
“There are many problems up and down this country and indeed, across the globe, and I think we solve them by empowering people.
“If healthcare taught me one thing, it is: help those that can’t and empower those that can.
“I want to be part of a legislative body that helps bring forward legislation to give people the tools to help themselves and help their communities “That is done not only by protecting their rights but by giving them responsibilities. After all, we cannot escape the responsibilities of tomorrow by evading them today.” Since taking on the role, Dr Evans has taken part in a debate on the proposed Hinckley National Rail Freight Interchange and asked the roads minister for more improvements to be made on the A5.
