Automotive seminars to be held at MIRA college
MIRA Technology Institute to host events at HQ on the A5
A SERIES of automotive industry seminars are coming up at the MIRA Technology Institute (MTI) outside Hinckley.
Cybersecurity principal engineer Paul Wooderson, is set to discuss the development of industry standards for protecting connected and autonomous vehicles against cyberattack at the opening session, which is to be held at the MTI’s campus on the MIRA Technology Park near Nuneaton.
Lisa Bingley, MTI director of operations, said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming Paul to the first in our series of seminars designed to provide cutting-edge insights on a range of topical industry issues.
“We are used to thinking of cybersecurity in terms of data breaches affecting privacy or making an adverse financial impact, but increasingly, as vehicles become more connected and autonomous, threats to software may now present a risk to life and health.
“Paul has been working at a high level to explore and recommend practices that provide manufacturers with the building blocks to minimise risk in the development, production, operation and decommissioning of autonomous and connected vehicles.
“Paul will provide an introduction to cybersecurity, discuss the challenges that it presents within an engineering discipline, and highlight some of the ways in which Horiba MIRA is helping customers to address the challenges of smart mobility.”
Mr Wooderson is a chartered engineer with 18 years experience in embedded systems security in the automotive and smartcard domains.
He leads the cybersecurity team as part of HORIBA MIRA’s vehicle resilience department and is a nominated UK expert to the international ISO and UN working groups developing new standards and regulations for cybersecurity engineering and software updates for road vehicles.
The cyber expert also led the 5StarS consortium, which recently completed a UK government-funded collaborative project to develop an assurance framework and consumer rating system for vehicle cybersecurity.
The MTI is the result of a unique collaboration led by North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College and its partners, Horiba MIRA, Coventry University, the University of Leicester, and Loughborough University.
It is a specialist facility designed specifically to train the next generation of engineers in the latest automotive technology and to create specialist skills in some of disruptive technologies such as electrification and driverless cars.
Marion Plant, chair of the MTI operations board, and principal and chief executive of North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College, said: “We’re delighted to start the year with the launch of a new seminar programme which will provide a platform for some fantastic and knowledgeable speakers.
“We look forward to seeing industry representatives at our campus next month and throughout the year ahead.”
Euro Projects Recruitment is sponsoring the seminar programme.
Future topics connected and will include autonomous vehicles and levy.
Since the MTI first opened in 2018, it has welcomed over 8,000 students and delegates, with more than 630 studying for accredited qualifications from a level 1 Institute of the motor industry certificate up to masters degrees.
It is due to launch a degreelevel engineering apprenticeship this year and has already seen more than 6,500 automotive professionals take part in professional development activities.
The first seminar is on March 18.
