Surprise defeat for Cat A as George Ward B taste victory

LEAGUE leaders Cat A suffered a surprise defeat when they clashed with George Ward B recently Despite Rhys Emery delivering a perfect three sets for the Desford side, GWB showed real determinat­ion with all three of their players collecting good wins.

Both Neil Matthams and Clive Stretton won two each and with Danny Whittaker winning one, they led by 5 sets to 4 prior to the doubles. Pete Jamieson and Gary Carr (Cat A) fought hard and were only denied a victory to level the scores by the narrowest of margins. The doubles game scores were 11-13, 16-14, 9-11, 11-6 and 12-10. GWB claiming the victory by 6 sets to 4.

Cat A were back on song in their next match defeating their own C teal by 20 sets to nil. Alex Mason claiming player of the match remaining undefeated.

Queens Mira had a good win over Cat H by 9 sets to 1, Dan Hogan and Ian Heavey both winning all their games. Ian Knight (Cat H) beating Pete White to claim their only set of the night. In their next game they were surprising­ly beaten by Cat D by 6 sets to 4. Then in their third match they drew with GWB 5 sets all. George Ward’s Neil Matthams claiming three good victories for the Barwell side.

G Ward A beat Cat D by 10 sets to nil. Adam Pettitt starring in one of his rare appearance­s for the Barwell side now he is at University. GWA collected another good win when they overcame GWB by 7 sets to 3, this despite an outstandin­g performanc­e from Mick Allsopp who won all of GWB’s sets. Their next fixture against Cat C saw GWA collect another impressive result defeating them by 8 sets to 2.Leigh Morris won his three for GWA and Alana Richardson (GWA) brought in from Division Two as cover, celebrated with two very good wins over Robert Dale and Rajiv Bhatia.

G Ward D had a good win over Cat C by 7 sets to 3. Both Edward Brown and Ollie Wynne were unbeaten for G Ward and young Alfie Newton making his debut ant just 10 years of age performed well taking a game from Dave Scragg. In their next match again fielding the young Alfie Newton G WD drew five all with Cat B. Edward Brown wining his three in style.

Last season’s Champions Goons were well beaten by Cat B when they met recently losing by 7 sets to 3. Jason Woodfield (Goons) winning all three of his sets.

The league table sees Cat A well out in front with both GWB and GWA making late surges towards the top end of the table
