Town homeless charity asks for help during crisis
A HOMELESS charity is appealing for help to ensure its work continues during the Covid-19 crisis.
Emmaus Leicestershire and Rutland is asking for support in its work to get formerly homeless people back on their feet.
The group provides accommodation for 16 people, along with meaningful work experience, funded training and an opportunity to regain lost selfesteem.
They have several shops in Hinckley.
The temporary closure of these social enterprises due to coronavirus poses a major risk to the good cause, so it has launched an emergency appeal for help.
Steve Grinstead, one of the beneficiaries of Emmaus, said: “Before I found Emmaus, I was homeless for 18 years, living from day to day and not knowing when or if it would ever end.
“It was a very scary experience.
“I slept wherever I could, in so many different places.
Sometimes it was in a park, or I’d find a secluded bench for the night.
“I felt completely alone, with no-one to help me through any of it. That’s all changed now I’ve found Emmaus.
“There’s no two ways about it – Emmaus saved my life, and I’m so very grateful.
“The charity has helped me and so many others.”
Mir Juma, chief executive of Emmaus Leicestershire and Rutland, said: “The people we support are staying at home and we’re trying to keep everyone safe.
“Our Emporium and La Boutique charity shops are closed but the support we offer to formerly homeless people continues.
“It is vital we do all we can to ensure everyone’s wellbeing and keep a roof over their head.
“We know it’s tough for everyone at the moment, but any gift you can spare will help us get through this difficult time.
“A donation from you will help your local homelessness charity continue its vital work during the current Covid-19 emergency and beyond.”
