FLY-TIPPERS who dumped piles of rubbish in the town centre are to face fines.

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council has issued seven fines from evidence found at the recycling bank at Sainsbury’s in Hinckley.

Boxes and bin bags of items and clothes were left strewn across the ground by the overflowing recycling point.

The fines are £150 if paid within 14 days and £100 of paid within 10 days.

The council said in a post on Facebook: “We understand that getting rid of waste is difficult during this time but we will not tolerate waste being dumped and will continue to enforce action against anyone who isn’t being responsible.

“Please store waste at home during this time. Thank you.”

The recycling point at Sainsbury’s is on private land, meaning the council does not empty the containers, but it can still issue fines in instances of flytipping.

Sainsbury’s said that the mess had been cleared up on April 9 and that the facility is still open apart from the Oxfam clothing bank.

The borough council said in a message on April 3 that there had been 15 reports of flytipping in that week.

There have also been problems with people leaving litter on the ground by bins taken out of service because of the Covid-19 crisis.

One resident found several bags of dog poo left beneath a bin in Burbage, on the corner of Boyslade Road and Sketchley Road.

He said: “It’s littering the public highway, it’s a health hazard, it’s left me speechless to be honest.”

We will not tolerate waste being dumped and will continue to enforce action against anyone not being responsible

A regular walker at Burbage Common has also written to the council to say that people are leaving dog poo bags on hedges.

Bins at the green space have been out of use since December last year because of the bad weather

Now cutbacks to council services due to the Covid-19 crisis have forced them to stay closed.

A spokeswoman for the borough council said previously:

“Some residents have been leaving litter in the street at sites where bins have been removed which is unpleasant for others.

“We would urge everyone to please be responsible with their litter and take it home with them until we are able to return to our usual service.”

Home refuse and recycling collections are continuing as normal while the garden waste collection has been suspended.
