Campaigners form political group for Heart of England
Groups aims to highlight issues that matter to people in area
TWO campaigners from Hinckley and Bosworth have formed a group to highlight issues that affect people in the area.
Hinckley county and borough councillor Michael Mullaney and Barwell parish councillor Mathew Hulbert have formed Liberal Democrats for the Heart of England.
The group aims to promote issues that concern people within the East and West Midlands.
Former Leicestershire Conservative MP and Health Secretary Stephen Dorrell has backed the project.
He recently left the Conservatives for the Liberal Democrats and has agreed to be a president of the organisation.
Councillor Mullaney, the group’s chairman, said: “The group was formed because of the need to start championing issues that affect us in Hinckley and Bosworth and across the Midlands.
“Too often Midlands issues are forgotten by Government.
“Our area’s public services such as education are among the worst financed in the country meaning local schools and their students miss out.
“Our local council in Leicestershire is among the worst funded by Government in the country meaning local people get an unfair deal compared to other better funded areas in other parts of the country.
“Important local infrastructure projects like electrifying the Midlands mainline through Leicestershire, to deliver people faster, cleaner, greener trains have been dropped by the Government.
“People see many decisions taken in London and the South East and the Midlands getting ignored.
“Whilst Scotland and Wales have parliaments to speak for them and the NorthSouth divide is often highlighted in the media, we here in Leicestershire and the rest of the Midlands are often forgotten.
“Liberal Democrats for the Heart of England is here to help fill that gap and champion people in the Midlands and their concerns.”
The group support.
Councillor Mathew Hulbert, secretary of Liberal Democrats for the Heart of England, said: “Our hope is that this group will be an important additional voice both for the region in the party and the party in the region.
“Lib Dems have previously won seats at every level of Government in the region and we have the values and vision to do so again.
“What we need more of are policies which reflect the needs and concerns people in the Midlands have.
“Our group intends to play a major role in ensuring that happens.” is already starting to pick up
