POLICE have issued an appeal for witnesses after burglars smashed their way into a charity shop.

Thieves gained entry by shattering the glass front door at the Salvation Army Donation Centre in Burbage, which only opened earlier this year, and stole the shop’s safe.

It is thought the raiders struck overnight on bank holiday Monday.

A spokesperson for The Salvation Army said staff were both shocked and saddened by the break-in.

“Since the Hinckley donation centre opened in February, we have been overwhelmed by the generosity and support of the community,” said a charity spokesperson.

“We were very saddened that money raised from donations was stolen; funds that would have helped someone in need at this time.

“The team members were shocked and we are doing all we can to support them. The Hinckley donation centre remains open and continues to welcome donations.”

A member of staff posted a photograph on Facebook, along with an appeal to help the police catch the culprits.

The post said: “It is with great sadness that I write this message, but last night our beautiful shop was broken into. They smashed their way through and stole from us, but we are remaining positive now opened up.

“Can I ask that you keep your eyes and ears open for any information to catch whoever did this and report it to the police.”

The Salvation Army shop was one of a number that opened in a new retail outlet just off Rugby Road, close to the boundary with Hinckley.

Other units in the new outlet, which is close to housing, include a Co-op, a Greggs and a Screwfix.

A police spokeswoman reiterated the appeal for help.

She said: “Police received the report of a break-in at a premises in Rainbow Way, Burbage. Entry was gained by smashing a glass pane. It is believed it happened between 5pm on Monday and 8.10am on Tuesday.
