SINCE the start of the pandemic, Covid-19 has appeared on the death certificates of 852 Leicester and Leicestershire residents.

Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures show that in the week ending August 14, there were three Covid19-related deaths across the county, up from two the week before.

The deaths include one in a hospital, the same as the week before, and two in care homes, up from one the previous week.

The data is based on the number of deaths registered up to August 22, where Covid-19 is mentioned on the death certificate.

Overall, there had been 852 deaths across the city and county involving Covid-19 from the start of the outbreak to August 14.

Of those, 545 took place in hospitals.

The number differs from those provided by University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (440 deaths reported) and Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (21 deaths reported) because the ONS data counts anyone who lived in the county and died in any hospital, where Covid was included on the death certificate.

Figures provided by NHS trusts only include patients who have tested positive for coronavirus and patients may be from other areas.

A total of 241 of those from the city and county who have died were in care homes. There were also 36 deaths recorded at home, 13 in hospices, 14 in other communal establishments and three elsewhere.

Other communal establishments include prisons, halls of residence, hotels, and sheltered accommodation, while “elsewhere” covers deaths outside and people declared dead on arrival at hospital.

The figures also offer a breakdown of where those that have died lived as data is compiled using their home postcode.

By district, 105 were from Hinckley and Bosworth, 123 from Charnwood, 82 were Blaby residents, 63 from Harborough, 30 from Melton, died, 318 lived in 67 from North West Leicestershire and 64 from Oadby and Wigston.

The number of deaths registered in England and Wales for the week to August 14 was above the five-year average for the first time since midJune, according to ONS figures.

However, the heatwave may have been behind the rise, as Covid-19related deaths continued to fall.

In that week, there were 9,392 deaths registered, which was 447 deaths more than the week before and 307 above the five-year average.

The number of deaths in hospitals remained below the five-year average, while the number in private homes continued to be higher than the five-year average.

Of the deaths registered, 139 mentioned Covid-19, a 9 per cent decrease on the week before.

Overall, 56,503 deaths involving Covid-19 have been registered across the UK.
