Campaigner to carry on his fight
AN LGBT+ rights campaigner from Barwell has pledged to continue fighting for full equality, after receiving praise for his work.
Mathew Hulbert received a certificate in recognition of being nominated in the “Creating a Sense of Community” category in the 2020 Hinckley and Bosworth Making A Difference volunteer awards.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the annual awards event wasn’t able to be held, but those nominated were still recognised.
The accolades recognise and celebrate the contribution that volunteers make in supporting the community and improving the quality of life for residents.
Mr Hulbert was a trustee of the Leicester LGBT Centre from 2014 to 2020 and its chairman from 2017 to earlier this year.
In 2019, with others, he helped set up the True Colours LGBT+ events partnership in Hinckley and Bosworth, which runs events throughout the year marking significant LGBT+ celebrations and commemorations.
These include LGBT History Month in February, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHoBiT) in May, Pride Month in June, Leicester Pride in September, and Trans Day of Remembrance in November.
Due to the pandemic, most events have had to be cancelled this year, but it’s hoped some may be able to return in 2021, dependent on government advice.
Mr Hulbert said: “I’m humbled and honoured to receive this recognition and thank those who nominated me.
“I also congratulate my fellow nominees.
“It’s fantastic that our borough celebrates its volunteers, who contribute so much to the life of our area.
“I very much enjoy volunteering as part of my campaigning for full rights, justice and equality for everyone in our LGBT+ communities.
“I accept this recognition on behalf of all of those I’ve had the honour of working with, both at the Leicester LGBT Centre and in the True Colours partnership, as well as Leicestershire Police and fire services.”
He continued: “It’s so good to see the increased level of LGBT+ visibility and advocacy locally and I’ll continue to work to see this increased yet further.
“Sadly there are still those who discriminate against people simply because of who they are or who they love.
“I’ll continue to stand against hate and to promote the full inclusion of all communities in the life of our borough and more widely.”
