The Jolly Bacchus is a long lost pub

Popular history group helps to raise thousands for good causes each year and streams live online twice a week

FOLLOWING on from our pictures of the Market Place and how it has changed over the years, this week we thought we would look at The Borough and Regent Street.

We have a splendid picture taken of Cleaver’s Saddlers Store that once stood in The Borough. The site today is an insurance broker and a shoe repair shop next to the United Reformed Church.

A fantastic picture showing the view into The Borough from the bottom of Lower Bond Street. This little bit of the road was once called Hog Lane. Notice how the road level is so much lower in this picture. Note the busy market stretching to the junction with Stockwell Head.

Another view we show is the view of The Borough towards the much missed Pickerings store. On the left is the Saddler’s shop we are featuring this week.

One of Hinckley’s long lost pubs features next as we see The Jolly Bacchus pub that stood opposite the aforementioned Saddlers shop. Today The Clarence building and the closed Yorkshire Bank stand here.

Happy memories are always recalled whenever we feature one of our cinemas. The Odeon or New Boro cinema was probably the best cinema in the town and the most luxurious. Many may also recall with fondness Harold Wightmans store in the lower foyer. Sadly this gem was lost to the town at beginning of the 1960s.

Instantly recognisable is the picture taken looking down Regent Street to Rugby Road taken around 1878

We wonder if our next picture was taken on a Thursday and half day closing? It shows how the view from Regent Street into The Borough once looked before the buildings were knocked down on the right.

There is a splendid picture of the John James Edwards bus taken just inside George Street with Regent Street in the background.

We wonder where good folk were off to?

The first phase of the building of Atkins High Cross building can be seen here in this picture with just one story above the much missed ‘arcade of shops’ that included Norman Grubbs, The A1 Candy Stores, (only place to get sweets and chocolate on a Sunday afternoon back then), Banners Café to name but a few.

In another picture, see how The Borough looked in 1975. Another lost pub The White Hart is pictured before it was demolished and the market runs outside.

We round off our pictures with The Union Hotel. The building we see today is not quite the original as it was heavily rebuilt in the late 1980s as it was found to have major structural problems at the time. the these
