Opticians becomes collection point for foodbank

-

A HINCKLEY opticians has chosen to support the local Salvation Army by becoming a collection point to help the work it does for the Hinckley Area Foodbank.

The team at Specsavers on Castle Street are collecting non-perishable food items and toiletries to donate to the foodbank, which is part of The Trussell Trust Network.

All donations will be used to create parcels to provide food and basic essentials for people in the local community in times of crisis.

“Lots of people visit our store each week, therefore, it is a great opportunity to help those less fortunate than ourselves,” said Specsavers Hinckley director Abhijit Roy.

“Customers have already been bringing in tins of soup, packets of pasta, cartons of long-life milk and shampoo and toothpaste.

“By simply adding one extra item to their shop or donating a surplus item from their cupboard at home, it really makes a difference.

“The effects of the pandemic have hit many families hard and we know that the use of foodbanks had been increasing in recent years.

“Covid has sadly seen this rise even further which is why we have chosen to support this important cause which is making a real difference in our local community.”

It is estimated tens of thousands of people have turned to foodbanks because of the pandemic.

Along with the impending energy price increase and the recent withdrawal of the Universal Credit uplift, foodbanks now need the support of the public more than ever.

The Salvation Army based on Lancaster Road, Hinckley, is one of a number of foodbank collection points across the town.
