Canaries edged out by highflying title chasers

BARWELL slipped to their first defeat in five matches on Monday night when they were edged out by title chasing opponents Leiston.

The Canaries took the lead on three minutes through BeckRay Enoru before Will Davies levelled the score six minutes later when capitalisi­ng on a mistake by Barwell keeper Jack Wycherley.

Leiston took the lead on the stroke of half time when Ben Fowkes latched onto Rossi Jarvis’ ball and smashed home inside the area.

And they doubled their advantage after the break when

Fowkes bagged his second goal of the game on 54 minutes, curling a shot into the bottomlef hand corner of the net.

Barwell kept up the pressure and Enoru claimed his second goal on 84 minutes to reduce the arrears to one but Leiston held on to secure their first ever win at Kirby Road.

Despite the defeat, the Canaries held their own against a side in the frame for promotion and the league title.

They also picked up a valuable three points on Saturday when goals from Beck-Ray Enoru and captain Brady Hickey gave them a 2-1 home win over Royston Town to build on a 2-1 away win at Kings

Langley and a 2-2 draw with Basford.

They have also strengthen­ed their squad with the loan signing of players from Northampto­n Town and Birmingham City.

Josh Tomlinson has joined on loan from Northampto­n Town, makng his debut off the bench in the game at Kings Langley.

Tomlinson became the youngest player ever to play for The Cobblers in November 2021, when he made his deubt aged just 15 years and 336 days old and went on to become the club’s youngest ever goalscorer in October 2022.

Goalkeeper Oliver Basey has from Birmingham City on loan.
