Queen’s TTC 2 lift Div Two title

-

THERE was a really close finish for the Division Two table tennis title, with Market Bosworth B for so long the frontrunners, being closed down in the final weeks by Queen’s TTC 2.

The two met in the final week of the league campaign at Market Bosworth and in a major surprise QTTC 2 crushed the title hopefuls 8-2. MBB were overwhelmed by the in-form Leicester Road side who literally raced into a 6 sets to 1 lead. Gary Carr (QTTC 2) was player of the match, winning all his games comfortably. Teammates Robin Entecott and Gary Rhodes both picked up two wins each to ensure the trophy.

Elsewhere in Division Two G Ward C found form in their last three games to improve the league table position, defeating QTTC 4 by 7-3. In their next match against their club-mates G Ward D they forced a draw in a close match. With the scores at three sets all, GWD then opened up a two-set lead to 5-3, but GWC fought back via player of the match Rob Webster(GWC), who defeated Eppie Southern (GWD) and then Webster combined with Simon Oakley (GWC) to win a close five set doubles game 5-11 to secure the draw. The closest game of the night was the one between Jaedon Lee (GWD) and Oakley (GWC), this also went to five with Oakley gaining the victory 11-7 in the fifth game.

In their final match GWC had a comfortable win over Goons 2, with both Webster and Luke Haskins (GWC) winning all their games. GWD were beaten by third-placed Hit and Hope B 7-3 Before collecting a 7-3 win over Mkt Bosworth C.

At the bottom of the table there has been a battle between Mkt Bosworth C and QTTC 4. MBC lost to Goons 2 in Braunstone 8-2 and QTTC 4 were trounced by Hit and Hope B 9-1.

Then the two met in Bosworth to decide who would finish at the bottom of the pile. The match was extremely close with the teams level at four sets each, Trevor Bassett (MBC) won the ninth set against Ragiv Batia (QTTC 4) and then Bassett and Stephen Mellor (MBC) took their doubles against Batia and Stuart Courtonel (QTTC 4) to secure not only the victory but to escape finishing bottom of the table as swell.

The final league table saw QTTC2 crowned champions finishing on 98 points, second MBB with 96 pts and Hit and Hope B third on 86 pts. At the bottom MBC finished on 39pts and QTTD4 on 35 pts.
