‘Important service’ held at town church
LGBT+ History Month has been marked at a town church.
A service took place at the Hinckley Great Meeting Unitarian Chapel.
It was led by Minister, Reverend Robin Hanford who talked about the prejudice that LGBT+ people can still face and the need to continue to push for full equality.
Hinckley based LGBT+ Rights Campaigner Mathew Hulbert also spoke at the event, talking about the background to LGBT+ History Month and also the work of the local True Colours LGBT+ Events Partnership which, since 2019, has organised events marking significant LGBT+ events in the calendar here in Hinckley and Bosworth.
LGBT+ History Month was launched in 2004 and is a month long observance held every February of lesbian, gay, bisexual, treansgender + hstory and sees events take place across the country.
Robin says: “It was a joy to host the LGBT+ History Month service at Great Meeting. As a Unitarian congregation, we were the first place of worship in the Borough to register to conduct same-sex marriages and all members of the congregation welcomed the chance to host such a special service for the local LGBT+ community in Hinckley.”
Mathew says: “It was an honour to be part of this important service and I’d like to thank Reverend Robin and his congregation for making me feel so welcome. LGBT+ History Month is an important opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come in the fight for full equality for our communities, to remember those who campaigned down the decades, and to look forward to what’s still to be achieved especially in regards to full equality and dignity for Trans people.”
