Attention switches to knockout cups

IN the Hinckley League focus turned to the Knockout cup competitio­ns. In the Holt Trophy, in the qualifying round there was a close match between Hit and Hope A and QTTC3.

Queens coming out on top 5-4, thanks to some excellent play from Alex Westerby (QTTC3). In their quarter-final encounter with Queen’s Mira however they found life more difficult losing 5-2, Curt Baggot(Q Mira) taking all three of his games.

George Ward E saw off the challenge of League Champions Market Bosworth A with an 8-1 victory. Both Andy Lebutt and Aran Jogi recording maximums for the Barwell side.

QTTC 1 were much to strong for the weakened G Ward A overcoming them 8-1, ensuring their place in the semiFinals.

G Ward B found themselves in the semi-finals without hitting a ball when Goons 1 conceded due to a lack of players.

In the Dry Logic Cup for Division 2 sides, two Queen’s TTC sides fought out a real battle before QTTC 2 overcame club colleagues QTTC 4 by 5-4 with no player remaining unbeaten.

Hit and Hope B overcame Market Bosworth C 7-2, Dave Shaw being player of the match by winning all of his games. Mention needs to be made of junior Charles Rowell (MBB) who put up a real fight in all of his games, never being more than a couple of points behind in any of his sets.

GWC defeated Mkt Bosworth B to win 6-3, both Rob Webster and Luke Haskins collecting maximums for GWC.

GWD found life a little tough against Goons 2 losing 8-1.

The semi-final line up is – Hit and Hope B v GWC and QTTC” v Goons 2, with all semi-finals to be played on Thursday April 20 at the George Ward Centre. THE Leicester U11/13/15 table Tennis events were held at Leicester Grammar School recently with a total of 28 players taking part, with all four clubs from the Leicester Junior League represente­d.

In the U11 event, the final was between Rex Pooley and George Thompson (both Sport in Desford), with Rex Pooley beat George Thompson to win the title: 11-5, 11-7, 11-7. Rex also won 2/2 in the U13 plate event as well!

Twelve players contested the U13 event. In the semi-finals Catherine Lu beat Swayam Ramparia (both Knighton Park), with Saxon Beardmore (G Ward Barwell) defeating Dylan Mahtani (Knighton Park) to join Lu in the final. Lu claimed victory winning 11-7, 11-4 and 11-7

The top two from each of the two groups progressed to the quarter finals, with the remaining players competing in further round-robin groups.

There were 14 players in the Under U15 event, the event was run in groups in the four winners going forward to the semifinals. In the semi-finals Khaalid Patel beat Aiden Cheng and Faisal Mulla beat Arnav Rai (all from KP)

In the final Patel (last year’s r/up) beat Mulla 11-8,11-8, 4-11, 11-8.
