Open victory for Doug Dimbleby

-

SUNDAY saw Measham AC hold their final Open match of the season, fished along the Lisneys & Globe Moorings sections of the Ashby canal, both sides of Snarestone Tunnel.

Competitors had the benefit of no frost, calm and light winds and for once fish did feed in some numbers, although somewhat tightly shoaled. As the match had split sections (pegs 2-7 Lisneys) and (pegs 13-18 Globe Moorings), there would be an outright winner and two section winners by default.

That winning angler was Doug Dimbleby on peg 13 near Snarestone Tunnel who fed bread crumb and fished punch on the hook at 12 metres under the far trees. Within 5 minutes of the whistle signalling the start he latched into a decent hybrid around the 1lb mark. Soon after, he started catching a few decent size skimmers to around 12ozs as well as some nice roach to 4 ozs. This style of catching went on throughout the whole match and at the scales he weighed a magnificent 5lbs 14ozs to take top spot.

The section winners were quite different in weight and catches which surprised many. Pegs 2-7 was won by Andy Morton on peg 5 who set his stall out to catch perch which he knew were resident. Feeding chop and maggot down the track he then tried worm on the hook. Patiently waiting, he managed three perch to around the 8ozs mark before a much better speciman around the 1lb was safely landed seeing him win that section with 2lbs 9ozs.

Pegs 13-18 was won by Kev Cooper on peg 18 who like the winner fed crumb at 10 metres to the far shelf and fished punch on the hook. His match went very much like the winner’s but with smaller fish. He caught steadily throughout the match, catching some nice roach to 4ozs, small rudd and small skimmers to see him win his section with 3lbs 12ozs.

Sunday will see Shackerstone AC stage their last Open match of the season, draw for this match is 8.45am and fish 10am to 3pm. All anglers intending to take part must book in with Andy Morton by 6pm Friday, March 10.
