Help to keep your park looking its best

- By STAFF REPORTER

DO YOU fancy helping to keep an award-winning park looking its best while keeping fit at the same time?

The Friends of Hollycroft Park are inviting people to join their volunteer gardening sessions.

Hollycroft Park, Hinckley, has won a Keep Britain Tidy Green Flag Award for 13 consecutive years.

A spokesman for the park group said: “Areas of the park are maintained to the highest standard and this is down to the constant upkeep from Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council but also to the supporting hands it gets from the volunteer gardening group.

“Volunteer gardening is a great way to stay active, get outdoors, meet new people and maybe learn something new.

“Gardening is recognised as a great way to exercise and stay fit, especially when you are older.

The movements you do with your body whilst digging, raking, squatting and weeding work all your major muscle groups, building your strength and flexibility. The best part of this workout is you hardly notice doing it because you are enjoying the activity.”

Friends of Hollycroft Park, a charity, supports the park through events and community activities. It has been running volunteer gardening sessions for more than 10 years.

The spokesman added: “As spring draws closer, people’s gardens start to come to life and shed doors creak open, but not everyone has a garden space and not everyone knows how to maintain it if they do.

“The volunteer gardening group gives you the opportunity to come and learn some of those skills from other people or even share your knowledge with others.”

Sessions will take place from 10am-noon on April 29, June 3, July 1, August 5, September 2 and October 1.

To get involved, you can contact the group via its Facebook page, or come along to the rear of the band stand at the bottom of the park just before 10am.
