Talks being held about A5 junction safety work

SAFETY improvements at a notorious A5 accident black spot remain on the table – but no date has been set for work to begin.

National Highways has reaffirmed its intention to install a roundabout at the Woodford Lane junction, near Fenny Drayton, in the wake of the latest serious collision.

However, the timetable for the junction’s overhaul has not been finalised.

National Highways said it is in talks with Warwickshire County Council and is looking into the possibility of a joint safety improvement scheme.

The agency said in October it was considering replacing the T-junction with a roundabout.

The most recent incident saw a man needing hospital treatment following a crash earlier this month.

Greg Payne, safety engineering team leader for National Highways, said: “We are aware of concerns about the A5/Woodford Lane junction and have carried out a thorough safety review of the location.

“Though we will not be undertaking any additional work at this time, we are working with Warwickshire

County Council to determine if a joint safety improvement scheme can be identified.

“Consideration may be given in the future, as part of improvements to the A5 between the M42 and M69, to installing a roundabout at the junction but these discussions are in the very early stages.

“Safety is always our priority and we continue to liaise with the parish council to discuss people’s concerns and suggestions.”

There have been numerous serious crashes at the junction in the last decade, including some fatalities.

Nuneaton councillor Keith Kondakor said: “Yet another crash at Woodford Lane.

“How many years will it take to have something like smart traffic signals at that junction?”
