Eggs-cellent idea as Striders help charity

-

DESFORD Striders Running Club continued its cracking year of fundraising for its 2023 charity of the year, Hinckley Area Foodbank, with a seasonal collection of Easter eggs.

Members of the club came up with an ‘eggs-cellent’ response to an appeal for chocolate eggs to help local families affected by the cost of living crisis.

In total, 81 Easter eggs were handed over by the club to Desford Foodbank representative Sue Houghton at the Striders’ home base, Sport in Desford.

Striders social secretary Karen Parkin, who organised the collection, said: “Striders are almost as well known for their generosity to the charities we support as we are for our running and this year looks like being no exception.

“We suspect that Easter eggs will be bottom of the list of needs for most of the local people who have been forced to turn to using the local Foodbank through little or no fault of their own.

“Thanks to the generosity of our wonderful club members many local families will get an ‘un-eggs-pected’ taste of Easter this year, but this is just the latest effort in what we hope will be a great year of support for the Foodbank.”

Club charity officer Arlene Heeley explained that Striders selected the Hinckley Area Foodbank as its charity of the year after a poll of members picked it out as a topical good cause in need of both practical and financial support.

She said: “Striders are based in Desford but we have members of the club who live throughout the Hinckley borough and it therefore seemed appropriate to support a charity that helps families right across the area.

“We’ve already had a great response to our fundraising efforts this year, organising an auction and the sale of used sportswear, and we have lots of other events and activities planned.

“We have a proud tradition of backing local good causes and charities close to our hearts. We always put a huge amount of effort into giving back to the communities we live in ourselves.”
