Rowell celebrates title double at championsh­ips

THE Hinckley Junior Table Tennis Championsh­ips took place recently at the George Ward Centre in Barwell.

The entry was the largest for many years and really stretched the organisers to get all the events completed on the night.

The number and quality of entries really augers well for local table tennis in the next couple of years. Eighteen youngsters took part in the Under 11 event, which was run in groups to ensure all entrants got at least two matches in each event. The eventual winner was Market Bosworth’s Charles Rowell who overcame his brother Harry to claim the title.

Twenty-two players competed in the Under 13s event again run in groups; eventual winner was Charles Rowell who this time in a close game overcame G Ward’s Saxon Beardmore to win his second title on the night.

Twelve people competed in the Under 16 event, with G Ward’s Dylan Lowther beating club mate Alfie Newton

to take the title.

The girls ‘event was won by Eppie Southern (G Ward) by defeating Isabelle Knight (G Ward) to claim victory.

The league’s handicap championsh­ip was also run recently at George Ward Centre,

The handicap doubles – Final saw Bob and Danny Whittaker take on Ian Heavey and Robin Entecott. There were two left handers, one in each duo which led to some interestin­g shots.

The Whittaker father and son combinatio­n ran out winners by two sets to one, 21-13,15 -21 21-14.

The hard bat event was run by Arun Jogi (GWE) who beat Jason Woodfield (Goons 1) to take the title.

The Handicap singles saw Russ Pettitt (GWA) take on Arun Jogi (GWE). Arun won the first set 21-14, lost the second 15-21.

Pettitt looked to have the event sewn up when he found himself leading 17-11 in the third, but Jogi fought back to deuce before winning 26-24 to take the title.
