Semi action in Holt Trophy and Dry Logic Cup

-

THE semi finals of the Holt Trophy and Dry Logic Cup have taken place at the George Ward Centre.

In the Holt Trophy, George Ward B were drawn against Queen’s Mira, who raced into a two-set lead thanks to good wins by Curt Baggott over Bob Whittaker and Ian Heavey who overcame Danny Whittaker in a five-set thriller, the Queen’s man taking the fifth 11-5 to clinch the win.

After that good start Queen’s Mira Faded and GWB took the next 5 sets to claim the victory and a place in the final. Well done to Nick Rayner who won all of his matches of the night.

Unfortunately the muchanticipated clash between GWE and QTTC1, last season’s winners did not take place as Queen’s 1 were not able to field a side, so GWE move into the final by virtue of a default.

The final will be fought out by two G Ward teams GWE v GWB on May 11 at the G Ward Centre .

In the Dry Logic Cup Queen’s TTC 2 defeated last season’s winners Goons 2 by 7-1. The match was closer than the scoreline might suggest with five sets going into a fourth game and two going the full distance of five games.

Robin Entecott (QTTC2) beating Pete Mason (Goons2) 12-10 in the fifth, then Gary Carr (QTTC2) won the other five game set beating Barry Robinson (Goons 2) 18-16 in the fourth before Robinson ran out of steam going down 11-0 in the fifth.

In the other semi-final Hit and Hope B took on G Ward C, who due to holidays etc had to put out a team featuring two of the juniors who attend the coaching at G Ward each week. H&H 2 won 7-2 with Steve Lawton (H&H2) claiming three wins. Mention must be made of Saxon Beardmore (GWC) who despite making his first appearance claimed the scalps of both Ian Nixon and John Harrison in straight games. The Dry-Logic Cup final will be between H&H2 and QTTC2 on May 11.
