I came across this interesting little article from 1959 from Sgt H.E. Swaine (Traffic and Road Safety Department Hinckley Police Station). Probably as true now as it was back then?

The New Highway Code By Sgt H.E. Swaine (Traffic and Road Safety Department Hinckley Police Station)

We hear every day about mishaps. Of accidents out on the road. And yet lots of people don’t study. The little book called Highway Code.

It was written so all should be better

Behaved to our own fellow man. It should have improved all road manners.

But something went wrong with the plan.

There’s a section for those who would travel

All over our roads on their feet. If they read and obeyed it, the driver

Would really be in for a treat. And there’s a section which tells us. The use of the road if on wheels. Advice such as this can but help us. Just try it and see how it feels. It gives extra rules for road users. The ’bike,’ motor cycle or car.

If we study these rules and obey them.

Our life will be longer by far. The third section's rightly devoted

(You’ll see if you study your code). To the way to look after our animals.

When taking them out on the road. There are pages depicting our signals.

But very few- bother with this. Indifferent or bad ones are given. The good ones they seem to dismiss.

There are also the rules for the country.

These are printed for us at the back.

Of keeping to paths, care, or litter Which shows that good manners we lack.

On the inside front cover you notice.

Some items of quite good advice. About vehicles, old age and children.

1 think we should study these twice.

On the outside back cover you notice.

It tells about stopping and speed. With a dry or a wet road surface. The motorist surely should heed. Because it’s not law no one bothers.

Its put away covered in dust.

But to those in the least conscientious.

Its pages should all be a MUST. The purpose of those who compiled it.

As all through the book we are led. Is that you and I. and our children. Will be safer, and not all be DEAD
