Earl Shilton dig deep to claim valuable away win

EARL Shilton Town CC 1st XI won away at City Cricketers CC 1st XI on Saturday.

Shilton lost the toss, and City Cricketers decided to bat first. The openers set off attacking the bowling, before a run out by an excellent piece of fielding by Phil Crouch broke up the partnershi­p.

Shilton looked ‘ fired up’ and bowled and fielded really well, with City Cricketers struggling on a tough wicket to build an innings and regularly losing wickets, finally being bowled all out for 126 off 43.1 overs.

All of the Shilton bowlers performed well with Kyle Chamberlai­n taking 2-31, Josh Robins 2-27, Sam Smart 2-38, Phil Crouch 2-26 and Tom Verow taking the last wicket off one ball.

Shilton made a steady start with openers Pav Singh 12 and Giles Holmes 21, before Pav was out caught with Shilton on 21-1.

Captain Sam Smart led from the front, attacking the bowling and finishing on 17, with the side steadily building the score towards the win.

Again, Shilton pulled together as a team and put in a shared batting performanc­e with Seniors Phil Crouch 21, Kyle Chamberlai­n 21 and James Millinship 12, followed by young Ryan Patel hitting the winning runs.

Captain Sam Smart said: “The lads played really well today and produced a great result away from home. They stuck to the task and delivered as a team. Particular­ly pleasing was the excellent bowling and fielding performanc­e restrictin­g City Cricketers to 126 runs, and the fact that we batted right down the order to get the job done!”

• Meanwhile Friday night saw a fantastic weekend for the club with the Under 11’s securing a great win at home against Ibstock Under 11’s. Shilton scored 290/3 - Net score 340 and Ibstock 259/10 - Net score 274. An enjoyable game all round took place, and the Coaches Bob Kelly and Tim Haywood were particular­ly pleased with the manner in which the game was played and that everyone was able to contribute, picking up a valuable 4 points.

Chairman Mick Coe said: “It was a fantastic day all round with 50 points for the seniors gained for the weekend. We are really proud of how all the players preformed today, showing real teamwork and commitment. Sam, Hemil and all the players young and old are really showing character and with the great win on Friday by the Under 11’s its really starting to feel that we are building something special for the future at Earl Shilton.”

• Next week the 1st XI play Maher CC 1st XI at home and the 2nd XI play away at Loughborou­gh Charnwood Old Boys CC 2nd XI.
