Experts all set to give talks to town society about history in the region
IN Leicester, approximately 50 metres from Richard III’s burial site, the recent discovery of a rare Roman shrine and more than 1,100 burials from the 11th century during the Leicester Cathedral dig are the topic of a fascinating talk on Monday 5th June at the United Reformed Church in Hinckley.
The shrine, found in a cellar to a Roman building, suggests that the site has seen religious observance for nearly 1,800 years and that the room could have been a cult room.
There is also rare evidence from the Anglo-Saxon period which includes a potential building and the first Anglo-Saxon coin to be found in Leicester for 20 years.
Secretary of Hinckley Archaeological Society, Shirley Hailstone, reported that the society is privileged to welcome Mathew Morris, project director of the University of Archaeological Services (ULAS), so soon after the close of the eighteen month excavation at the Leicester Cathedral.
Mathew’s talk is the story so far of the project known as “The Leicester Cathedral Revealed”.
A second talk on Monday 10th July follows further research into Romano-British life in Leicestershire and Rutland since the discovery and excavation of the now famous Rutland Roman villa with its magnificent mosaics.
Peter Liddle, who featured in the TV program, “Digging for Britain” with Professor Alice Roberts during this excavation, will consider other villa sites in Leicestershire and Rutland and put into context the activities and lifestyle of the peasant farmers within this period.
This talk is one of many Festival of Archaeology activities throughout the whole of July 2023 in Leicestershire and Rutland.
Everyone is welcome to attend both of these most interesting and topical talks on Monday 5th June and Monday 10th July at The United Reformed Church, The Borough, Hinckley LE10 1NL.
There is no need to pre-book as there are plenty of seats in the main Church. Doors open at 7pm, payment on the door of £6 per person, and light refreshments will be served before the talks begin at 7.30pm.
