Letter an example of Labour’s preoccupation with class warfare

-

John Payne’s recent anti-Tory diatribe (HT 17th May)- which he concludes by declaring that the Conservative Party is a “gigantic scam” on the British public - is not only in the worst tradition of Labour’s outdated preoccupation with class warfare but also resonates with the “Tory Scum” sentiments of the party’s senior membership.

In addition it manages to insult all those moderately-disposed, thoughtful and prudent people who voted for the Conservative party (a considerable majority in the Bosworth constituency) by implying that they are gullible and have been duped by the evil press barons into a misguided electoral decision.

Presumably he would prefer a single-party socialist system with a state-controlled press to ensure that the “rich and powerful” don’t corrupt the people’s minds.

He refers to deceitful “propaganda” by the Tory Party hierarchy without quoting examples, but seems to have overlooked the current disgraceful Twitter campaign, endorsed by his Party leader, which claims the our PM is not in favour of jailing child molesters - while a Labour government “would lock them all up”.

Perhaps he missed my letter on the subject a few weeks ago.

Regarding his claims of fiscal mismanagement over the last thirteen years of Conservative government and what he calls the needless period of austerity he has obviously forgotten the infamous note on the desk of the outgoing Labour Chancellor, for the attention of his successor, stating simply that “there is No money left” - many a true word spoken in jest!!

What he castigates as “austerity” was a necessary exercise in “living within our means”, - a concept which is perhaps alien to the modern Labour Party, whose lavish spending proposals would incur borrowing which would leave our children and grandchildren shouldering debt for many years to come.
