ANNAPOLIS ROYAL, NOVA SCOTIA

An English colonial force led by Sir William Phips surprises the French at their fortress at Port Royal.

Using seven warships and an army largely composed of Massachusetts militiamen, the French garrison is forced to surrender. Phips's men then plunder the settlement and leave behind an unpopular puppet government.
