having been humiliated by almost every major power in europe over the preceding half-century, in october 1914 the ottoman empire launched a surprise attack against the russian empire with german battleships. immediately coming under pressure from russia in armenia and britain in the near east, germany needed austria-hungary to knock serbia out of the fight so that an overland route could be opened up to resupply istanbul.
