Wing Commander John Butcher, commanding officer of 617 Squadron, with Squadron Leader George ‘Johnny’ Johnson, during an event to mark the 75th anniversary of Operation Chastise, at RAF Coningsby. The attack on German dams on 1617 May 1943 used an innovative ‘bouncing bomb’, which skimmed on the surface of the reservoir before hitting the dam wall and exploding.
