Napoleon III revived France’s imperial ambitions, experienci­ng great victories and costly defeats

France once again allies with Britain, this time against Qing China. An Anglo-french force attacks and occupies Canton. The resulting Treaty of Tientsin opens more Chinese ports to Western trade, and the French and British establish embassies in the previously closed city of Beijing.
