A French soldier raises his bayonet towards a German civilian in a city in the Ruhr. The industrial region was occupied by France after Germany defaulted on its significant war debts. They had been enforced in the Treaty of Versailles but were too large for the economy to cope with and resulted in economic disaster and the eventual fall of the Weimar Republic.
