This oil on canvas by Antoine-jean Gros depicts the gruesome scenes of a Napoleonic battlefield, showing the emperor surrounded by dying and wounded men. The Battle of Eylau was a bloody encounter: Russian, Prussian and French casualties ran into the tens of thousands.
