Japanese tanks let off smoke canisters during the country’s annual military exercises in Shizuoka on the Pacific coast. The Japanese army, officially named the Japan Ground Self-defense Forces, was originally establishe­d by the USA in response to the outbreak of the Korean

War. As its name suggests, the forces are primarily intended for defensive purposes.
