The French in­stall Max­i­m­il­ian, Arch­duke of Aus­tria as em­peror of Mex­ico in or­der to cre­ate an im­pe­rial client state. Mex­i­can repub­li­cans strongly re­sist. Bat­tle­field de­feats and guer­rilla war­fare even­tu­ally force the French to with­draw from Mex­ico.
