FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR

Napoleon III is deliberately provoked into declaring war on Prussia by chancellor Otto von Bismarck. A German coalition rapidly invades northeastern France, and Napoleon is humiliatingly defeated and captured at the Battle of Sedan. The French Third Republic is declared and Napoleon is forced into permanent exile.
