Napoleon III is deliberate­ly provoked into declaring war on Prussia by chancellor Otto von Bismarck. A German coalition rapidly invades northeaste­rn France, and Napoleon is humiliatin­gly defeated and captured at the Battle of Sedan. The French Third Republic is declared and Napoleon is forced into permanent exile.
