BOMBER BONEYARD
C.1994
This aerial view of the Davis-monthan Air Force Base outside Tucson in Arizona shows decommissioned Boeing B-52 Stratofortresses awaiting disassembly. After the end of the Cold War, the US and Soviet Union signed the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), which required bombers on both sides to be chopped up and destroyed. The treaty stated that the aircraft remains had to stay out in the open so Soviet satellites could photograph them for verification.
